What characterises the area is that the educational establishments supply a great deal of highly qualified employees for the companies. Through work placements and  practical experiences, this local collaboration is beneficial to both parties.

The training programmes in the area are tailor-made to the opportunities available to students when they have completed their studies. This applies not least to the training of mechatronic engineers at the University of Southern Denmark Sønderborg.

The University of Southern Denmark has Denmark’s highest concentration of international students. People from more than 50 different countries make up 75 % of students at the Sønderborg campus.

The engineering training programmes at the University of Southern Denmark are at the Mads Clausen Institute that each year supplies engineering graduates to the companies in Sønderborg. With its 1,900 engineers, Sønderborg Municipality has the country’s highest concentration of engineers outside Denmark’s capital Copenhagen and its suburbs.

THE BUSINESS ACADEMY SOUTHWEST

Specialists in, among other things, computer science and production technology are trained at Business Academy Southwest in Sønderborg. This is something which local businesses benefit from; surveys have indicated that no less than up to 85 % of graduates from these two programmes found jobs with one of the area’s companies no later than a month after they had completed their training.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

It is no secret that entrepreneurs in Region South Denmark have the highest survival rate in Denmark.

There is a very high professional level among the entrepreneurs who try their luck in Sønderborg, and this is due not least to the strong focus on entrepreneurship in the area; a focus that exist from the moment they embark on their training. The Business Academy, for instance, provides everybody with the opportunity to take part in entrepreneurship and innovation programmes across their fields of study.

Students can make use also of the local Idea House; here they are given the chance to develop ideas while being provided with competent advice.
