Tips
In Denmark leaving a tip is not required or expected in restaurants, hotels or when taking a taxi but, of course, it is always appreciated. If you decide to leave a tip, you would normally just round up the total. For example if the total is DKKm 156 – you could round up to DKK 160.
Value added Tax
In Denmark a 25% VAT (moms) is paid on almost all goods and services. Prices in shops always include VAT while the prices of services are often indicated without VAT. In some shops foreign visitors will get a refund on part of the VAT if their purchase is above a certain amount. Look for the blue and white TAX-FREE sign in the shop and ask about the rules.
Currency
The Danish currency is the “krone”. There are 100 “øre” in one ‘krone’. A krone is abbreviated “kr.”Coins of the following denominations are used: 50 øre, 1 krone, 2 – 5 – 10 and 20 kroner. There are 50 – 100 – 200 – 500 and 1000 kroner notes. Exchange rates can be found on the Internet at the following address, where you can also find a convenient currency conversion program: http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/
Living Expenses
The cost of living is fairly high in Denmark, but living expenses will of course vary according to personal requirements and standards. Going out can be rather expensive. A number of restaurants and cafés offer inexpensive luncheons from 11:00 to 15:00 and it is easy to find cheap pizza places. A hot meal in a student cafeteria costs approx. DKK 25.
If you plan to eat out in restaurants, then plan on spending much more on food.
You should be able to survive quite well on budget of approximately DKK 1,500 a month for basic living expenses.
