Quick guide for visitors: how to travel to and from Sønderborg

By car

There is a connection to Sønderborg and Als from Main Road 41 to the southern Jutland motorway E45. Two bridges will take you from the mainland to Sønderborg in the southern part of Als: Christian X Bridge and the Alssund Bridge.

If you are on your way to Als from the north, and you want to go round Sønderborg, you can take the little ferry ‘Bitten Clausen’ from Ballebro to Hardeshøj - a ten-minute voyage. If you take Main Road 8, you will be at the border with Germany in 30 minutes.

To Germany by bus

If you wish to use public transport to Germany, the quickest way is by bus. The journey from Sønderborg to Flensburg takes around an hour, and the bus departs once an hour. See the timetable for this and other routes, including the X buses, at Sydtrafik.

By train

If you are arriving by train, there are railway stations in both Gråsten and Sønderborg with direct connections to Odense and Copenhagen (and to other places) every other hour.

By plane

There are several daily flights from Sønderborg Airport to Copenhagen. The flight is around 40 minutes, so you can go and visit Tivoli, The Little Mermaid, etc. in a day. See offers at Cimber Sterling’s website.

If you arrive in your own plane, it is possible to land at Pøl Flyveplads at Nordborg.

Travel by ferry

The ferries from Ærø (Søby-Fynshav) and Funen (Bøjden-Fynshav) go to Als in around one hour. You can use these ferries also to go on a little trip to Ærø or Funen if you would like to explore the neighbouring islands – you may even make it a bicycle trip. Remember to order a place for your bicycle on the ferry.

Free parking

You will find free parking in many places in the centre of Sønderborg. Remember to set your parking disc. Foto af Frederik M på Flickr
